In Copenhagen, one of the most inspiring speeches was given by California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. He is one of a group of governors are not waiting for world leaders to act. They are acting on their own. His message is: “People start things and then when they become strong enough, government responds.”

Also heartening is that 1000 young people came to Copenhagen to speak to the world leaders. I filmed a few of them for my Young Voices on Climate Change movie series. One 15 year old young man from the Maldives spoke about how his island nation is being inundated by sea level rise. It was chilling to realize how many people are already feeling the effects of climate change.

Hi Lynne Cherry. I'm at NSF in D.C. where I was just telling one of the climate change researchers here (an ice core scientist) about your book. She had mentioned that she wanted to write a children's book about climate change and so I let her know about your book and the teacher's guide that I had recently ordered to use w/ my students in Alaska. (I'm in D.C. as a Presidential Award winner for science teaching [and am so excited to be meeting the President tomorrow!]:) Anyway, I had just told her about your book and then just a few minutes later, a friend of mine sent a link to your website on Facebook! It was fun looking through your pages but I wanted to say hello and that I love your work and have used it in remote Alaska for the past 17 years (in the villages of Golovin, Shishmaref, and White Mountain). I also wanted to say hello because, I don't know if you remember this, but once you and I went swimming together and ate Polyphemus horseshoe crab eggs (because we wondered how they tasted:). We were on the Deleware Water Gap where we had been counting the crabs the night before with PVC meter squares. I think that was about 10 years ago or so. Ms. Cherry, I'm a second grade teacher and have read The Great Kapok Tree to bring awareness of our environment esp. on Earth Day. As I was researching information on youtube there was a song sung by 4th graders. The music is very upbeat and would like to know if you could direct me to the person for purchase. Hi Nelly,
Two of my rain forest heros are two women who started the International Canopy Network. They study the tropical rainforest. They are the first two scientists who studied the canopy-- the top of the rain forest.
I think you should interview Meg Lowman. Also, she wrote a book called Life in the Treetops and Nalini Nadkarni wrote a book about Trees that came out last year. You should research them. I think that would make a great paper-- three women working to save the rainforest. Another woman who I admire so much for her work to save acres in the Monteverde rainforest was Rachel Crandell who died last year. That should get you started. After you do your research, write me again if you have some specific questions. good luck!

Hello Lynne! In Colorado, my daughter's kindergarten class has been so moved by your book The Great Kapok Tree! They were so inspired that each student made a poster about the saving the rainforest and have stood outside of the school at car drop off time holding their signs, chanting "Save the Rainforest" and collecting donations. Thanks to the donations by parents the school will be buying acres of the rainforest. We would love for you to see the pictures of the kids and be able to send you these along w/the a letter. I have a question. When I visit a school and dozens of kids come up and show me the books they've written it is wonderful to see them. Some are really amazing. But when a hundred kids are asking me to sign their books, or scraps of paper, if I signed one I would have to sign them all. This usually occurs while I"m autographing hundreds of my own books for them or during my program. Do I spend the time talking about their writing and drawing or signing all the books they wrote?
So the schools almost always ask the students not to ask me. It puts me in a very awkward position and it would hurt the kids' feelings if I personally tell them I can't sign their book. I think the teachers should be the ones to tell them that I can't -- not me. Should I just sign some of their books until it becomes apparent that it's derailing my program? But then the kids who didn't get autographs might be upset. Any thoughts about this? I got a critical note from a parent who was unhappy that I did not sign their kid's book when I was asked to. Most schools won't let me sign the kids' books and they let the kids know that beforehand.

We are from a school in England called RPPS and are in class 2P.

Thank you for your books teaching children about respecting the planet.We have been learning all about respecting the rainforest and we loved reading your book The Great Kapok Tree. We loved it so much that we even acted it out for our class assembly. All of the lower school and parents came to watch the story so we hoped to spread the word that everyone can make a difference!

We are an English school who since Christmas have been learning all about the Rainforests of the world. As part of our studies, we have worked on and read your books, The Great Kapok Tree.
We read you letter to the reader at the back and felt strongly enought to look into deforestation in more detail. The children in my class have written letters back to you with our findings and would love to send some to you, maybe via email? can we do this?

Hi Lynn!
Thanks for doing such a great job on the "our changing climate" book.  I had the opportunity to users it as a teacher being inserviced at Crater Lake with Linda Hilligoss.  
  I was hoping that in future editions (being an Oregonian, that you might see fit to discuss such recent discoveries as hypoxic zones and ocean acidification, both of which have been tied to global climate change.

Thank you for all your comments! Please "Like" Lynne Cherry's Children's Books on Facebook and post photos of your Kapok Tree plays, students' letters and curriculum for my books that you'd like to share with other teachers.

When you teach about the rain forest, please teach it comparatively taking students outside to experience a real living forest. Sit quietly and wait, watch and listen. After awhile birds and other wildlife will appear! How is the rain forest similar to this forest? (photosynthesis, green, oxygen, CO2..). How is it different? (are both deciduous? what's the average height of trees in each? How many species live in each? ) Thanks for your letters! I hope to hear from you on my FACEBOOK page!
